**Raw food vegans thin but healthy, study finds

Got this yesterday from a friend at work:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7317449/
Raw food vegans thin but healthy, study finds
People on strict diet weigh less, have strong bones, other benefits
Reuters
Updated: 4:38 p.m. ET March 28, 2005

WASHINGTON - People who adhere strictly to raw food vegetarian diets are thin but have surprisingly robust bones, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.

Although nutritionists and the food industry have warned that a diet without dairy foods can lead to the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis, the team at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found the vegans they studied had many of the signs of strong bones.

“We think it’s possible these people don’t have increased risk of fracture but that their low bone mass is related to the fact that they are lighter because they take in fewer calories,” Dr. Luigi Fontana, who led the study, said in a statement.

“Raw food vegetarians believe in eating only plant-derived foods that have not been cooked, processed, or otherwise altered from their natural state,” Fontana’s team wrote in this week’s issue of the Archives of Internal medicine.

Low BMI and body fat content
“Because of their low calorie and low protein intake, raw food vegetarians have a low body mass index (BMI) and a low total body fat content. It is well documented that a low BMI and weight loss are strongly associated with low bone mass and increased fracture risk, while obesity protects against osteoporosis.”

Fontana’s team studied 18 strict raw food vegans aged 33 to 85. All ate a diet that included unprepared foods such vegetables, fruits, nuts, and sprouted grains. They had been on this diet for an average of 3.6 years.

The team compared them to 18 more average Americans. The raw food group had an average body mass index of 20.5, while the average group were slightly overweight with a BMI of 25.

BMI is an internationally accepted measurement of height to weight, and a BMI of 18.5 to 24 is considered the healthy range.

Higher levels of vitamin D
Fontana expected the vegans to have low vitamin D levels because they avoid all animal products including dairy. But in fact their vitamin D levels were “markedly higher” than average.

Vitamin D is made by the skin when the body is exposed to sunlight and is key to keeping strong bones. It is added to milk and other foods because it is so important.

“These people are clever enough to expose themselves to sunlight to increase their concentrations of vitamin D,” Fontana said.

And the vegans had low levels of C-reactive protein, an inflammatory molecule that is becoming linked with the risk of heart disease, diabetes and other chronic disease.

Furthermore, they had lower levels of IGF-1, a growth factor linked to risk of breast and prostate cancer.

Fontana does not advocate a raw food diet. But he said that to lower the risk of cancer and heart disease people should eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

hi there
i have an astrology class to teach and have been shopping around for the right place to teach it. i was offered space at Edge of the Circle books, as their downstairs room is available on sundays. but i would love to "keep it in the family" and kick down some of the $$ to a place that supports my idea of community in Seattle. Is the space able to support classes at this time? if not now, then when?

Living Paradise Manifestation Meeting!

Namaste,

Happy New Year!

My wish for this new year is that we all open more fully to love, peace, and joy in this moment, for this moment is all there is.

Things are moving forward for Living Paradise. We served Live Foods at a nightclub opening on New Year's Eve in Seattle, and received lots of positive feedback. We served all new recipes that I've been developing over the last year, and people really loved the food!

We're working on getting our first Live Foods products into stores, and I'm going to begin teaching beginning Live Foods classes in February. (more info coming on the classes in the next day or two)

There is a lot of momentum, and things are moving toward our eventual opening in Capitol Hill. And, there is a lot to be done to bring that about.

Would you like to see Living Paradise become a reality? Would you like to be hanging out with friends and family, eating delicious Live Foods, listening to great live music, in a fantastic, comfortable, and inspiring environment? I know I do. Right now in fact.

So, let's work together and birth this Living Paradise for all of us!

Please come to the:

Living Paradise Manifestation Meeting
Wednesday, January 26th, 2005
Blue Magnetic Night

7pm to 11pm

contact bluecobalt (at) livingparadise.org for location and directions.

We will begin with an overview of the vision of the project, give an update as to what has been happening and where we are at, present what needs to be done at this point to move forward, and discuss possibilities for the immediate and long term future.

Please come even if you have no idea what you would do to help. You never know what piece of the puzzle you might be holding. And, we have several to do lists that you can look through and see if there is anything that you feel called to do. Your input and energy would be greatly appreciated.

This day on the Dreamspell calendar is Blue Magnetic Night:

I unify in order to Dream
Attracting Intuition
I seal the Input of Abundance
With the Magnetic tone of Purpose
I am guided by my own power doubled

peace, love and light,
blue

What is Living Paradise?

Living Paradise is the synthesis of many inter-related goals of the Theurgy Foundation, and the culmination of years of planning and work. It's focal point is the Living Paradise Living Center to be opened in Seattle, Washington on Winter Solstice 2004.

The Living Center will be a community gathering place in the truest sense – a nexus for healthful living, an education center, a networking hub, a creative outlet for visionary arts, a comfortable healing space, an opportunity for empowerment, and a source for inspiration and spiritual growth. With a focus on sustainability, peacefulness, and abundance, it will encourage a return to harmony with your self, your body, your community, and your world. The Center will promote a new way of living, a new way of doing business, and a new way of being in this world. It will be a dynamic and fluid creation, encouraging change, growth, and expansion on personal as well as societal levels. And, it will serve as a haven for sustainable, environmentally conscious living in the midst of a major North American city.

The Living Center will offer an organic, vegan live foods restaurant and deli, an organic juice bar, a visionary art gallery, a yoga studio, a sustainability store, a performance venue, class and workshop areas, healing rooms, meditation and sacred spaces, and free wireless broadband internet, all under one solar panel covered roof. This consciously created, non-toxic environment will also be home to the Living Paradise line of prepared live foods to be sold in stores and markets, and our live foods catering business.

The Center will bring together many diverse communities for networking, communication, education, activation, cross-pollenization of ideas, and sharing of energies. These will include our local neighborhood community, the raw/live foods community, the health-conscious community, the artistic/creative community, the spiritual community, and the modern tribal community, as well as people simply seeking entertainment or a fresh, new dining experience. This coming together will inspire greater innovation and manifestation, and work to further the Living Paradise approach to living.

Educational opportunities will abound, including classes and workshops, flyers and informational handouts, on the job training for employees, volunteer training, and the education that occurs through simply being immersed in the energies of Living Paradise – experiencing the food, the environment, and the people. A wide range of topics will be covered such as live foods preparation, the live foods lifestyle, yoga, dance, sustainability, environmentalism, non-violent communication, spiritual growth and evolution, and artistic techniques and creation.

The Center will be a venue for visionary arts offering gallery, live music and performance spaces, with an environment always open to the creation and sharing of art.

Healing on all levels will be a top priority, supported by the organic and healthy food, the non-toxic environment, deep interpersonal connection, classes and workshops, yoga, dance, and on-site practitioners of the healing arts. Various healing modalities will be available including massage, Reiki, Acupuncture, Homeopathy, Naturopathic medicine, counseling, belief re-patterning, breathwork, and re-birthing.

Our focus on sustainability will include minimizing negative impact of all kinds, ultra-efficient use of energy and resources, liberal use of recycled materials, use of innovative technologies, and sharing and teaching concepts of sustainability with others. All of this will be focused on building a better future rather than creating more waste and introducing more disposable goods into the world.

The physical environment of the Center will be carefully designed to ensure that it is as non-toxic as possible. There will be no smoking. We will use organic materials throughout the building, such as organic paints and bamboo flooring, and limit the use of petroleum-based products and materials. Water and air will be filtered, energetically balanced, and charged with comforting negative ions through the use of the latest highly sophisticated filtering technologies. The Center will be filled with lush, green, growing plants for their healthful benefits. And, of course, all food served will be 100% organic, vegan, live, and non-GMO.

Imagine arriving at Living Paradise. Your first impression will be the unusual, artistic hand-made awnings that resemble vines growing and flowers blossoming, with lots of lush plants and flowers hanging from the awnings and all around the entrance to the building. You enter into a peaceful, inviting environment filled with beautiful, shining people, music, plants, and life energy. The ceilings are high and wooden, the floor is beautiful bamboo with lots of rugs, visionary artwork is everywhere, and the room is filled with light streaming through the extra large windows. The environment feels peaceful, fresh, and healing. People are milling about, eating delicious food, interacting, sitting at tables or relaxing in big comfy chairs. Many of them have laptops and are connecting with the world via the free wireless broadband internet. The counter is to your right, where people are ordering their food, or getting a fresh organic juice. Some people are grabbing a quick bite to go from the glass-front refrigerators before continuing on their way. You might want to sit down, have something to eat, and relax a while, or perhaps peruse the information in the education corner, or spend some time shopping for healtful products in the sustainability store. If you continue on deeper into the building, you will come across the yoga studio, a large room with a bright bamboo floor, an abundance of plants, and a large saltwater aquarium filled with live coral and fish along one wall. Upstairs you find the Temple area for meditation and worship, visionary artists' studios, a wet/dry sauna, and rooms for massage and healing. Returning to the main room, you discover that a four-piece quartet has begun playing live music, and even more people have arrived. You get a cup of organic, herbal tea and a delicious raw dessert, and sit down to relax into the experience. Welcome home.
